Banjo Lessons in Rotterdam

A Typical Banjo Lesson may include...

Sometimes people put walls around certain styles of music, and try to isolate a genre and not contaminate it with any other style. I do agree that it is important to understand the "pure" historical context of the banjo and it's evolution, however there is only one Eric Clapton, one Earl Scruggs, and one Ralph Stanley. Banjo lessons are focused on YOU, encompassing many approaches, genres, and techniques. Banjo lessons may include-

  • Traditional Earl Scruggs style banjo
  • Fiddle tunes
  • Beatles tunes
  • Scales and music theory
  • Chord shapes and progressions
  • Composing your own songs and improvisations
  • Finger picking and Clawhammer/ Frailing/ Strumming the Banjo
  • Singing and playing
  • How to practice/get better/memorize songs/play everyday
  • Bluegrass, folk, pop, jazz, blues, metal, country, gospel, or experimental music applied to the banjo

"I have been taking banjo lessons from Bob since  June, 2008.  What a great experience!  Bob always comes to the lesson excited to teach, and that makes me excited to learn.  Bob makes me feel comfortable to try something and fail, and he is the first to congratulate me when I succeed.   He has a passion for music and the skill as a teacher that just motivates me to want to learn more and more.  I am so glad to have found Bob as my banjo teacher.  A+"   ~Emily Downs

Please feel free to use the contact link if you have any questions about lessons, beginning banjo, scruggs vs. clawhammer style, method books, etc.

Bob Hamilton plays and recommends Deering Banjos and highly recommends the Goodtime banjo as a starting banjo.

Click here to watch this 8 year old play Cripple Creek by Earl Scruggs. He had been playing for about 4 months.
